Hub Cities Consortium, in partnership with the University of New Mexico, offers the College Preperation Program. The program is designed to promote educational opportunities for economically disadvantaged and at-risk high school students. Thirty selected students are exposed to the complete college experience that includes living on campus, working on campus, attending English and Mathematics classes, and interacting with other students. Most importantly, the high school students are able to learn first-hand about the benefits of earning a college degree. Students are provided with information on preparing for college such as academic advisement, admissions and financial aid.
Students have the opportunity to participate in a two-week summer immersion program that allows participants to experience college life. During the program participants live in the University of New Mexico residential halls and are able to utilize the various resources on campus. As a part of this program, students receive 30 hours of SAT/ACT preparation training offered by campus staff. The participants also have the opportunity to gain work experience on campus. In addition, the students attend various career exploration and college planning workshops that provide information on college admission, financial aid and life skills. Upon completion of this 2-week program, youth will receive 1 unit of college credit.
Students agreed that one of the highlights among many of the College Prep program is the Leadership Training they receive. The teens participate in the 17 Element Low Ropes course that offer team building and challenging activities while building skills in problem solving, trust, conflict resolution, communication and listening.
The high school students participate in two cultural excursions that are both educational and enjoyable. Students visit the Pueblo of Acoma, also known as "Sky City," which is situated on a 367-foot high sandstone rock. It is considered to be the oldest inhabited village in the United States. The students also take a ride on the breathtaking Sandia Peak Tramway. The Sandia Peak Tramway is the world's longest single section cable aerial tramway and an engineering marvel. Students experience the drama of an 11,000 square mile panoramic view of New Mexico and observe varied landscape and wildlife.
